The Ministry of Environment announced on the 19th that, as a result of checking using a precise microscope, termites found in a house in Gangnam-gu were identified as termites belonging to the genus Cryptotermes of the Kalotermitidae family. Genetic analysis is in progress for the found termites, and it is expected that it will take a week to complete the identification (confirming the taxonomic location and species information of the organism). The Ministry of Environment announced that it had also carried out emergency control work on houses where termites were found. This is the second time that drywood termites and termites have been discovered in Korea. The termites discovered this time do not harm the human body, but they eat trees and cause great damage worldwide. Termites that live in Korea live in a humid environment, but these termites can survive in a dry environment and live without contact with the ground. Therefore, unlike domestic termites that only damage wood in contact with the soil, they can cause great damage to traditional Korean houses and wooden cultural properties that are separated from the soil. The Ministry of Environment explained, “No traces of inflow from the outside have been found, and it is presumed to live and move in the indoor wooden door frame.” The Ministry of Environment plans to conduct an epidemiological investigation at a later date. The Ministry of Environment requested that if foreign termites are discovered, they should be reported to the National Institute of Ecology Foreign Species Report Center.
